New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi can visit Manipur between 12 and 13 September. In such a situation, the people of the violence-affected state are hopeful that the PM’s visit will definitely bring peace to this conflict-torn area.
Apart from Manipur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also likely to visit Assam and Mizoram. Social activist and convener of Delhi Meitei Coordination Committee (DMCC) Dr. Seram Rosesh told ETV Bharat that all the civil society organizations of Manipur have been demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur.
It has been more than two years and the situation in the state remains tense. He said, “At least, with Modi’s visit we can expect a positive change in the scenario of Manipur.” Although there is no official confirmation of Modi’s visit, a senior leader of Manipur told ETV Bharat that Modi can visit the state for a day.
Modi is likely to attend events at Kangla in Imphal and Peace Ground in Churachandpur. He is also likely to meet internally displaced people (IDPs) living in various relief camps in the state.
This will be PM Modi’s first visit to Manipur since ethnic violence broke out in the state in May 2023. So far more than 250 people have been killed and about 60 thousand people have been displaced in this violence. According to an official note from the General Administration Department of Manipur, “First of all, the Chief Secretary of the Government of Manipur welcomed all the members and officials present in the preparatory meeting for the proposed VVIP visit in September 2025.”
It said that this visit should be organized in a grand manner. The Secretary of the General Administration Department (GAD) is requested to take the discussion forward. Manipur has been under President’s rule since February, as a result of which, normalcy has been restored in the area. However, even after more than two years of violence, the state remains ethnically divided.
Civil society organisations and opposition parties in Manipur are demanding Modi’s visit to the strife-torn state. Meanwhile, the Congress has strongly criticised Modi for not visiting Manipur despite the massive devastation in the state. Modi’s visit will coincide with his visit to two other northeastern states including Assam and Mizoram. In Assam, Modi will participate in the year-long centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika and lay the foundation stone of various development projects.
PM Modi may visit Mizoram to inaugurate the 51.38 km long Bairabi-Sairang railway line. It is worth noting that Modi’s Assam visit has been changed from September 8 to September 13 to 14.
