The government has amended the rules for private permit vehicles operating from several cities, including the capital. These changes will come into effect in all states, including Uttarakhand, from April 1, 2026. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made significant amendments to the All India Tourist Vehicle (Permit) Rules, 2023.
This new regulation, known as the All India Tourist Vehicle (Permit) Amendment Rules, 2026, will come into effect from April 1. According to the rules, it will now be mandatory for tourist vehicles to begin their journey from their home state (the state that issued the permit). No vehicle can stay outside its home state for more than 60 consecutive days.
When applying for a permit, it will now be ensured that the vehicle in question does not have any outstanding national highway toll fees. The amendments to the rules have increased the specific permit period from 12 years to 15 years. It will now be mandatory for individual applicants to provide Aadhaar and for companies to provide Corporate Identification Number (CIN) or GST number to verify that the applicant’s business is in the same state where the vehicle is registered.
