The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an increase of 58 MD and MS seats in Uttarakhand’s government medical colleges for the 2025-26 academic year. For the first time, Almora Medical College has received 35 PG seats in various courses. The new PG seats provide significant relief to Uttarakhand, which has been facing a shortage of specialist doctors.
The state government submitted a proposal to the central government to increase PG seats. In response, the NMC approved 10 MS and MD seats at the Government Medical College, Dehradun, 13 at Haldwani, and 35 at Almora Medical College.
MBBS doctors will be able to pursue MS and MD courses in pharmacology, anatomy, microbiology, ophthalmology, forensic medicine, orthopedics, general medicine, pathology, community medicine, ENT, physiology, anesthesiology and surgery, biochemistry, gynecology, and pediatrics.
Five government medical colleges operate in the state. There are a total of 174 PG seats in 19 courses in Dehradun, Haldwani, and Srinagar. However, Almora and Haridwar Medical Colleges do not offer PG courses. With the new seats, the state will receive specialist doctors.
To address the shortage of specialist doctors in the state, efforts are being made to increase PG seats in medical colleges. The government has set a target of having 100 MS and MD seats each in each medical college.
