New Delhi: Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. This meeting took place a day after he was named as the Vice Presidential candidate by the ruling NDA alliance.
He arrived here to attend various NDA meetings and met many leaders. Soon after the meeting, Modi said in a post on ‘X’, “Met C. P. Radhakrishnan ji. Congratulated him on being named the Vice Presidential candidate by the NDA. His long experience of public service and expertise in various fields will make our country prosperous. May he continue to serve the country with the same dedication and determination as before.” Radhakrishnan may file his nomination on August 20. He is expected to be felicitated in the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday.
Earlier on his arrival in New Delhi on Monday, Maharashtra Governor and NDA’s Vice Presidential candidate CP Radhakrishnan was welcomed by Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju, Ram Mohan Naidu. Apart from Prahlad Joshi, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and others welcomed him.
Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan is currently serving as the 24th Governor of Maharashtra from July 31, 2024. Earlier, he served as the Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024. He also held additional charge as the Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry between March and July 2024.
Senior BJP leader Radhakrishnan was elected to the Lok Sabha twice from Coimbatore and has also been the state president of Tamil Nadu BJP before this.
The Congress has criticized the NDA for making CP Radhakrishnan the candidate for the post of Vice President and called him “another RSS man”.
Let us tell you that the term of the Vice President is five years, however, the post fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament on July 21 citing health reasons.
The Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members of Parliament of both Houses of Parliament. The election of the Vice President is governed by the provisions of Articles 64 and 68 of the Constitution. The Election Commission notifies the Vice Presidential elections by the Presidential and Vice Presidential Elections Act, 1952.
According to Article 66(1) of the Indian Constitution, the Vice President shall be elected by the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote and the voting at such election shall be by secret ballot.
