Mussoorie: The liquor shop opened on the side of the national highway in Dudhli area has provoked anger among the local people, especially women. The women of the area, terming this move as anti-social, not only protested, but also reached the SDM office on Monday under the leadership of councilor Jasbir Kaur and submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate Dehradun. In the memorandum, they have demanded immediate closure of the liquor shop.
The women of Dudhli who came to protest said that ever since this shop has opened, the situation is going from bad to worse. Incidents of drinking alcohol openly on the roadside have increased. On the road from where the children of the village go to school and college, drunk people are found sitting there. Due to which the girl students are feeling very uncomfortable and unsafe. A woman said angrily that how can we send our children to study? When people drinking alcohol are found at every turn, then who will protect the daughters? The women said that this is not just a shop, but the beginning of the collapse of the entire social structure. Already, the trend of addiction is increasing among the youth in the area. Now this shop is making their access easier.
Councillor Jasbir Kaur said that the Uttarakhand government is ignoring social values in the race to earn revenue from alcohol. What kind of policy is it to open liquor shops near schools, temples, settlements? She alleged that the rules set for opening liquor shops are being openly ignored. Jasbir Kaur and women protesters have warned that if this shop is not closed within the next one week, then women will be forced to block the national highway indefinitely.
