New Delhi: On the occasion of International Tiger Day, a wildlife expert on Tuesday stressed on the need to declare more tiger reserves across the country to conserve tigers and increase their population. The wildlife expert also praised the efforts of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, which has led to an increase in the tiger population in the country.
Let us tell you that International Tiger Day is celebrated every year on 29 July to emphasize the importance of tiger conservation across the world. It raises awareness about the challenges faced by tigers and the initiatives taken to protect their future.
Notably, India’s approach to tiger conservation has evolved considerably. It includes legal systems, international cooperation and active community participation, from initial bans on hunting and trade to advanced, comprehensive strategies.
70 percent of the world’s tigers in India
These continuous efforts have resulted in the survival of tigers. India’s efforts have yielded remarkable results, as more than 70 percent of the world’s tiger population now lives here. The National Tiger Conservation Authority conducts the All India Tiger Estimation every four years in collaboration with the states.
According to data released by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the tiger population is expected to increase to 3682 in 2022 as compared to 2967 in 2018. 58 tiger reserves have been notified in India for the conservation of tigers, which cover about 2.5 percent of the geographical area of the country. Since 2014, the number of tiger reserves has increased from 46 to 58.
Wildlife Expert’s View
Speaking to ETV Bharat on the occasion of International Tiger Day, wildlife expert Jalpan Rupapara said, “India has seen an increase in the tiger population. This is a result of conservation efforts and the strong will of the government. I think it is also due to strict action against poaching.”
Referring to tiger reserves across the country, he said, “If more sanctuaries are created, it will definitely help in the conservation of tigers. Many states like Madhya Pradesh are creating new tiger reserves. If this process is strengthened, it will definitely boost the tiger population and conservation.”
Human and animal conflict
The wildlife expert stressed that the population living in and around protected areas plays a vital role in the conservation of all wildlife species, including the tiger. He further said that their positive thinking and actions can help reduce human and animal conflict.
He further said, “They should be made aware about what to do and what not to do while seeing wild animals like tigers or leopards. So, if they are properly taught about how to live with big tigers, it will reduce human and animal conflict. This will definitely lead to the conservation of these species.”
