Jamalpur (East Bardhaman): A political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu following the death of a migrant worker from West Bengal. The body of the worker from Bardhaman arrived at his home in Jamalpur on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Bimal Santara (51). He died in a hospital in Tamil Nadu. The Trinamool Congress claims that the worker took his own life by consuming poison out of fear of SIR. The BJP denies these allegations.
What happened:
Bimal Santara had gone to Tamil Nadu with some people to work as a rice threshing worker. On October 26th, he fell ill and was admitted to a hospital in Tamil Nadu. He passed away on Thursday. The family filed a case of unnatural death with the Tamil Nadu police. The police conducted a post-mortem. Then, with the help of the district administration, his body was transported to his home in Jamalpur on Saturday night. What family members say:
Bimal’s family claims that he was under a lot of stress after the announcement of the FIR in the state. The deceased’s son, Bapi Santara, said, “My father was very stressed about the SIR papers. If he doesn’t have them, how will he live here with his family? He fell ill due to this worry.” He said that the post-mortem examination has been conducted, but it is not known whether any traces of poison were found in the report.
Political Uproar:
After learning about the deceased’s family’s complaint, State Minister Swapan Debnath, Trinamool Congress District President Rabindranath Chatterjee, Jamalpur MLA Alok Majhi, and other Trinamool leaders visited Bimal Santara’s house that night. The Trinamool Congress claims that the migrant worker took this extreme step by consuming poison out of fear of SIR.
State Minister Swapan Debnath said, “Many people are committing suicide out of fear of SIR. Bimal Santara took his own life. Our All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee called me and District President Rabibabu and asked us to be with his family, so we went to his house.” The Election Commission is responsible for this death. Because of the way they have implemented the SIR, the number of suicides is increasing. Mamata Banerjee has launched a protest against this. A massive protest movement will be launched. We assure the people that we are with them.
Trinamool Congress District President Rabindranath Chatterjee said, “Bimal Santara of Jamalpur committed suicide out of fear of the SIR. He worked as a migrant worker in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, people who worked in other states are panicking after learning about the SIR because they fear that if their names are omitted, they may have to leave the country. Due to the SIR, one person after another in the state is taking the extreme step of suicide. The Election Commission is responsible for this. In reality, they want to win the elections by manipulating the voter list.”
Jamalpur BJP leader Pradhan Chandra Pal said, “This is a tragic incident. However, the SIR has nothing to do with this incident. He was hospitalized due to illness. How can there be any panic about Sir?”
