Chandigarh: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested Punjab Police Deputy Inspector General (Ropar Range) Harcharan Singh Bhullar red-handed from Mohali for accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh.
The CBI had laid a trap to arrest him red-handed. According to sources, Bhullar, a 2007 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was taking a bribe of Rs 5 lakh every month from a businessman. He was arrested on a bribery complaint. Official sources said police officials were taking bribes from various individuals or companies on a monthly basis and the arrest was related to a bribery complaint. The police officer will later be produced in a CBI court in Chandigarh. After the arrest of the DGI, the CBI has launched extensive searches at various locations associated with the accused. The raids are expected to provide more evidence linked to him and allegations of bribery. According to sources, Bhullar was collecting a monthly bribe of Rs 5 lakh in a case involving a scrap dealer.
Upon receiving the complaint, the agency laid a trap and arrested the officer. The incident took place at a hotel in Mohali. A scrap dealer had filed a complaint with the CBI that Bhullar had demanded a monthly bribe in return for allowing his illegal car business to continue.
The businessman said the DIG had initially asked for Rs 2 lakh, but later increased the amount to Rs 5 lakh. A case has been registered against him under several sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Bhullar was earlier serving as senior superintendent of police in various districts.
During his tenure in the Ropar range, several cases of illegal car trading came to light, where junk vehicles were being sold by changing the chassis number.
