Advocates from the Dehradun Bar Association began protesting on Monday against the Health Department’s proposal to build a night shelter in the civil complex of the old District Judge Court complex. Dehradun lawyers took to the streets on Tuesday to press their demand, but their method of protest was somewhat different.
Lawyers have adopted a new method of protest to demand the construction of chambers on the vacant land of the Dehradun Old District Court. They are symbolically blocking the road daily and will continue to extend the protest period in the future. On Monday, lawyers blocked Haridwar Road from 10:30 am to 11:30 am, disrupting vehicular traffic.
On Tuesday, the blockade continued from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm (for two hours). The Bar Association has stated that it will continue to extend the protest period until it receives concrete assurances that the night shelter proposal be canceled and chambers be built there.
City Magistrate Pratyush Singh arrived at the scene of the traffic jam on Monday morning. Bar Association officials presented him with a memorandum of their demands. During this time, vehicular traffic on Haridwar Road, between the new and old courts, was completely blocked. Vehicles were diverted from both sides of the road, causing significant inconvenience to drivers during peak hours
