Supriya Sule demands the government issue a statement in Parliament. Regarding the IndiGo flight cancellations, NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule said, “We condemn what happened to IndiGo. The Indian government should issue an official statement in Parliament and an investigation should be conducted. You can see the situation over the past two days. I hope the Indian government will answer to the country and Parliament on Monday regarding IndiGo. If there were four or five airlines, this situation would not have arisen. Therefore, competition is good, and the customer is king. A monopoly by one airline is not good for any economy, country, or business.”
These problems arose when the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) immediately suspended its Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) order. This regulatory suspension came after several days of delays and cancellations across the country, impacting IndiGo’s flight operations. This is causing significant inconvenience to passengers across all sectors.
48 Flights Cancelled at Chennai Airport Today
Passengers were inconvenienced this morning by the cancellation of 48 flights at Chennai Airport. Due to a nationwide shortage of pilots, flight engineers, and flight attendants at IndiGo Airlines, flight services have been severely impacted for the past four days, causing inconvenience to passengers. Due to this problem, passengers at Chennai Airport are also facing significant inconvenience. IndiGo Airlines flight services were completely suspended yesterday afternoon.
IndiGo Airlines flights resumed operations at Chennai Airport this morning. The first flight departed from Chennai for Pune at 3 am. Following this, 10 flights operated to destinations including Ahmedabad, Andaman, Guwahati, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Jaipur, and Kochi. It was announced that various IndiGo flights will operate gradually today. Meanwhile, company management announced that IndiGo Airlines flights scheduled to operate from Chennai to 28 destinations, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Kochi, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Bhubaneswar, and Patna, from this morning to night, have been cancelled. Airport officials told ANI that at Ahmedabad Airport alone, seven incoming and twelve outgoing flights were cancelled between 12 midnight and 6 am on Saturday. The disruption led to long waiting lines, crowded counters, and frustration among passengers over the lack of alternative travel options.
Among those affected was Maharshi Jani. He broke down in tears as he recounted how the disruption cost him and his team the opportunity they had been working hard for for months. He told ANI, “I was supposed to fly to Guwahati on the 6:15 am flight. It was a connecting flight from Kolkata. We were selected for the Smart India Hackathon 2025. Nearly 74,000 ideas were submitted, and about 1,400 were selected. Our center was North-Eastern Hill University, and we were supposed to perform there. Jani said, “Despite months of preparation, the cancellation left his team of six and two accompanying mentors with no other option. We had booked IndiGo flights, but the flight was delayed, so we wouldn’t be able to go. There’s no other way to get there.”
He added, “If we go by train, it will take us three days to get there. Our six-seven months of hard work have now gone to waste. We’re returning home. Such opportunities are rare. We were selected in the first attempt, but the flight cancellation prevented us from continuing.” We were a team of 6 people and we also had 2 mentors with us.’ Another passenger, Ikhlaq Hussain, said that despite travelling internationally, he was stranded. Hussain said, ‘I have reached Ahmedabad from Jeddah and I have to go to Lucknow. I am stuck here for the last 2 days but the flight is getting delayed.’ A large number of passengers across the country faced problems on Friday due to delays and cancellations of IndiGo flights. Amidst this problem, a passenger arriving in Bengaluru from Jodhpur airport said that the airline is not responding since morning.
He said, “There’s only one staff member, and they have no answers or solutions. There’s no clarity.” Meanwhile, an official statement said the Ministry of Civil Aviation has directed airlines, especially IndiGo, to immediately implement measures to resolve the major disruption to flight schedules and stabilize services without delay.
To alleviate public inconvenience and ensure service stability, two orders have been issued, specifically for IndiGo. The orders state, “It is expected that all flight schedules will stabilize and begin to return to normal by midnight today. Full service and stability should return within the next few days. Passengers can track delays from home using information systems installed by IndiGo and others. IndiGo will automatically provide a full refund for their tickets if a flight is cancelled.”
The order further stated, “If passengers are stranded, they will be accommodated in hotels where airlines have booked accommodation. Special steps have been taken to ensure that the elderly face no inconvenience.” They will be provided lounge access. Passengers on delayed flights will be provided with snacks and other essential items. A 24×7 control room of the Ministry of Civil Aviation is continuously monitoring the situation.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation stated that the central government is fully alert to the difficulties faced by air travelers and is in constant dialogue with all stakeholders. The statement further stated, “Every possible step will be taken, including the relaxations announced by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Friday, to resume schedules and ensure stability to minimize inconvenience to the public.”
