New Delhi: US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Alison Hooker held discussions with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Both sides focused on translating the vision articulated by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their February meeting into concrete results. Hooker is on a five-day visit to India to strengthen strategic and economic cooperation.
According to the US Embassy, โโHooker conveyed the administration’s intention to advance cooperation in sectors such as defense, energy, technology, space, and supply chain resilience. It said, “This meeting is an opportunity to translate the vision of President Trump and Prime Minister Modi’s February meeting into tangible progress that enhances American security, jobs, and competitiveness, while also supporting India’s long-term goals.”
The Ministry of External Affairs said the talks, held under the Foreign Office Consultations mechanism, allowed for a comprehensive review of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The agenda included trade, investment, defense relations, civil nuclear cooperation, critical minerals, new technologies, and initiatives to transform relations using reliable supply chains and cutting-edge strategic technologies.
Both sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments and reiterated their shared support for a free and open Indo-Pacific. Several significant outcomes emerged from PM Modi’s visit to Washington in February, including India’s commitment to increasing purchases of US oil, gas, and military platforms. New Delhi and Washington also agreed to pursue a major trade agreement and set a target of $500 billion in annual bilateral trade by 2030.
The US Embassy further stated that the Under Secretary emphasized “Washington’s objective of deepening cooperation in defense, energy, technology, space, and resilient supply chains, and the values โโof US-India cooperation that foster American innovation and help India emerge as a global technology leader.” The statement said they commended the Foreign Secretary for his continued partnership as both the United States and India pursue shared priorities that deliver tangible benefits to the American people and advance India’s national objectives. The Ministry of External Affairs said both sides welcomed the steady progress under existing dialogue mechanisms and agreed to enhance cooperation in key areas of the relationship, including expanding opportunities in defense partnership, technology, and trade.
The initiative to transform relations through strategic technology, launched in February, aims to build secure supply chains, foster innovation, and increase collaboration on critical and emerging technologies such as AI and semiconductors. Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to continuing discussions on expanding trade ties and strengthening cooperation in strategically important sectors.
