Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held a press conference and leveled several allegations against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi. He accused the MP and his wife, Elizabeth Gogoi, of having close ties with Pakistani agent Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. This statement by the Assam Chief Minister has intensified the political controversy. Congress’s Assam Pradesh President and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi retaliated.
On February 8, 2026, Gaurav Gogoi posted on social media platform X, calling Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s press conference the biggest flop press conference of the century. He described it as “worse than a C-grade movie” and said it contained the most absurd and false points. Gogoi wrote that journalists from Delhi and Assam had to endure this press conference, which was a complete flop.
I pity the journalists from Delhi and Assam who had to suffer the most flop press conference of the century. This was worse than a C grade cinema. Most mindless and bogus points offered by the so called political shrewd Chief Minister. This #SuperFlop is in contrast to our…

This was worse than a C-grade movie. The most mindless and bogus points offered by the so-called politically shrewd Chief Minister. This #SuperFlop is in contrast to our #XomoyParivartanYatra, which has successfully uncovered 12,000 bighas of land encroached upon by the Chief Minister and his family members.”
During the yatra (march), the Congress had claimed that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his family had encroached upon 12,000 bighas (approximately 4,000 acres) of government/prime land in Assam. Gogoi had said that when the Congress comes to power, these lands would be taken back and distributed among the poor and landless.
What allegations did Himanta Biswa Sarma make?
It is worth noting that on February 8, Himanta Biswa Sarma made serious allegations against Gaurav Gogoi in a lengthy press conference. He raised questions about Gogoi’s wife Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi’s alleged connections with an agent/organization in Pakistan, claims of Gogoi’s family having accounts in Pakistani banks, Gogoi’s trip to Pakistan in 2013 and the special visa extension he received, and his children relinquishing their Indian citizenship, among other issues. Sarma cited the SIT report and announced that the matter would be handed over to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) as it was deemed to be related to national security.
