New Delhi: India on Tuesday issued a new travel advisory for its citizens in Nepal. At least 19 people have died so far amid the ongoing protests in Nepal. At the same time, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned after several days of violent protests against corruption and a ban on social media.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has said that Indian citizens should postpone their travel to Nepal until the situation stabilizes. Those who are already in this Himalayan country have been urged to stay indoors, avoid going out on the streets and follow the safety guidelines issued by local authorities and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.
The advisory states that Indian citizens who need assistance can contact +977–980 860 2881 and +977–981 032 6134. These numbers can also be contacted through WhatsApp.
Statement of the Ministry of External Affairs
The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement, “We have been closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday and are deeply saddened by the loss of lives of many young people. Our condolences and prayers are with the families of the deceased. We also wish for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
The statement further said, “Being a close friend and neighbor, we hope that all concerned parties will exercise restraint and resolve any issue through peaceful means and dialogue.” The statement also said that Nepalese authorities have again imposed curfew in Kathmandu and several other cities.
Kathmandu International Airport closed
Amid violent protests in Nepal, Kathmandu International Airport has been closed with immediate effect. Airlines including Air India and IndiGo have also issued travel advisories for flights to Kathmandu due to the ongoing unrest. Air India flight cancelled
An Air India spokesperson said, “Flights operating on the Delhi-Kathmandu-Delhi route have been cancelled today in view of the current situation in Kathmandu. We are closely monitoring the situation and will share further information. The safety of our passengers and crew is of utmost priority at Air India.”
IndiGo suspends operations
IndiGo further said, “Travel advisory. In view of the current situation in Kathmandu, the airport has been closed for operations. As a result, all flights to and from Kathmandu are currently suspended. If your travel is affected, you can visit our website to choose an alternate flight or claim a refund. We are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local authorities to resume operations as soon as possible.”
The airline said that customers are advised to keep checking our official channels for the latest advice and updates. We look forward to the resumption of normal operations and are deeply grateful for your patience and understanding.
