Chennai: The Chennai High Court bench headed by Justice Velmurugan has stated that it will not recuse itself from hearing the bail plea of Savukku Shankar. The YouTuber Savukku Shankar was arrested by the police on December 13, 2025, based on fraud cases registered against him at the Adambakkam and Saidapet police stations.
Subsequently, the Chennai High Court, which heard a habeas corpus petition filed by his mother Kamala seeking his release on bail on medical grounds, granted Savukku Shankar interim conditional bail for three months until March 25.
Following this, the police filed a petition in the Chennai High Court seeking to cancel the interim bail granted by the court. The petition stated, “Savukku Shankar has violated the bail conditions imposed by the court. He continues to post defamatory videos. A medical team at Stanley Hospital is ready to provide him with medical treatment.”
When the case came up for hearing in the High Court last week, the judges questioned Savukku Shankar’s side, asking if it was right to obtain bail on medical grounds and then intimidate witnesses. They also ordered the police to collect all documents against Savukku Shankar and directed his mother Kamala to file a reply to the petition before adjourning the hearing.
On January 19, the case came up for hearing again before the bench of Justices P. Velmurugan and M. Jyothiraman. The lawyer appearing for Shankar said, “This bench should not hear this case. It should be recommended to the Chief Justice that the case be transferred to other judges.”
Hearing this, the judges said, “Don’t try to ‘blackmail’ this court. It won’t work. We will not recuse ourselves from this case. We have never entertained such a request. If needed, Savukku Shankar can appeal to the Chief Justice and seek relief.” The judges also made it clear that even though Savukku Shankar had filed a petition expressing a lack of confidence in this bench, they would not recuse themselves from the case seeking to cancel his bail. Furthermore, they ordered Savukku Shankar to respond and adjourned the hearing until this afternoon (January 20).
