New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party returned to power in Delhi after 27 years on February 8, 2025. To mark the first anniversary of this event, on February 8, 2026, 500 new electric buses, both 12 and 9 meters long, were flagged off from Delhi’s historic Ramlila Maidan and launched onto the city’s roads. The new electric buses were flagged off by BJP National President Nitin Naveen and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The results of the Delhi Assembly elections were announced on February 8, 2025. The people of Delhi elected 48 MLAs. The swearing-in ceremony was also held at Ramlila Maidan. Today, 500 electric buses were flagged off from the same location and launched onto the roads of Delhi, providing people with better, pollution-free transportation. The capital city of Delhi has been facing a severe shortage of buses, causing inconvenience to commuters.
At the event, BJP National President Nitin Naveen said, “The Bharatiya Janata Party is a government that works. The way the people of Delhi showed faith in the BJP after 27 years and formed a government with a full majority, today the Delhi government is doing important work for the people of Delhi.” He appealed to the Chief Minister and the cabinet to continue working for the betterment of the people of Delhi in the coming days.
Target of 7400 electric buses:
CM Rekha Gupta said that February 8, 2025, was a historic day. We chose Ramlila Maidan for this event because this ground has witnessed many struggles. This is the same Ramlila Maidan where people from political parties sat wearing masks of honesty, taking oaths that they didn’t want cars or bungalows. This Ramlila Maidan saw them leaving in cars, living in palatial houses, and also witnessed their corruption. Delhi was yearning for basic amenities. But the arrogant Kejriwal used to say that one would have to be reborn to defeat him. But the people of Delhi showed that if they know how to put someone on a pedestal, they also know how to bring them down. After 27 years, the people of Delhi elected the BJP. Our MLAs have proven through their 365 days of work that power is not for personal gain but for service. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, “Today is an important day to thank the people of Delhi, the day they placed their trust in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sent 48 BJP MLAs to the Delhi Assembly. Today, we have given the people of Delhi 500 new EV buses, bringing the total number of EV buses in Delhi to 4000.” Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, “Delhi has the longest metro network in the country, spanning 400 km. Payment has been made for Phase 5. We are continuously working to improve transportation in the capital city. We have signed a contract for cooperative taxis (Bharat Taxi). We are working towards introducing a policy for e-rickshaws. We are providing pink cards to women and also issuing NCMC cards. Delhi will work together with the country for a developed India by 2047.” Target of operating 14,000 buses:
Three buses will operate between Delhi and Panipat. Transport Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh said that 500 electric buses are being launched. The target is to have 14,000 buses operating in Delhi by 2028. After 18 years, our government has launched interstate buses. The operation of electric buses between Delhi and Panipat will improve connectivity between Haryana and Delhi and will also provide convenience to the people.
Buses already running on 3 interstate routes:
The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is already operating buses from Delhi to NCR and surrounding cities. Electric buses are running to Baraut, Sonipat, and Dharuhera. DTC launched its inter-state electric bus service on September 24, 2025, from Kashmiri Gate in Delhi to Baraut in Uttar Pradesh. This service resumed after about 18 years. The Delhi-Sonipat (Haryana) route was launched by DTC on November 14, 2025. The Delhi-Dharuhera (Haryana) route service started on December 18, 2025.v
