In Nainital district, 2,982 tax defaulters of the Transport Department are missing. RCs have been issued to all of them after they failed to respond to notices. Many of the defaulters are nine to ten years old. Many have missing addresses and their assigned numbers are out of service. The Transport Department has to recover 22.68 crore rupees from the defaulters. Now, the department is verifying the local address along with Aadhaar card in the registration of new commercial vehicles to prevent such a situation.
The department’s income depends on commercial vehicle taxes. The Transport Department has over 26,000 goods vehicles, a similar number of other small taxis and maxi vehicles registered with it. When the department searched the tax collection files, more than 20,000 defaulters were identified. Nine and a half thousand were found at their homes, while the rest are untraceable. More than 2,900 defaulters are missing. Notices for outstanding dues of Rs 30.19 crore have been issued against 9,636 individuals, while RCs have been issued against 2,982 individuals with outstanding dues of Rs 22.68 crore.
16,807 old cases, increased to 3,266 from April to August
16,807 tax defaulters are old. 3,266 new cases have been reported from April 1, 25, to August 30, 2025. The outstanding dues have increased from Rs 52.15 crore to Rs 1.14 crore. By August 30, the total number of defaulters was 20,974, and the outstanding amount was Rs 53.62 crore.
Recovery of Rs 6.25 crore from 9,449 individuals
Through the campaign, the department recovered Rs 6.25 crore from 9,449 individuals from April to August 2025, but this is not even one-sixth of the total outstanding amount. Reaching out to 10,624 individuals and recovering the outstanding amount of Rs 47.04 crore remains a challenge.
The Transport Department owes 10,624 defaulters a total of ₹47 crore. Notices have been issued to 9,636 of them. RCs have been issued against 2,982 of them. With the help of the administration, they will be traced and the outstanding amount will be recovered
