As soon as the doors open in Gangotri Dham, it has been a tradition for centuries that only the Nirvana form of Mother Ganga is visible till Ganga Saptami. According to the tradition, on Ganga Saptami, the worship of her stone idol will start with rituals from Brahma Muhurta itself. After that, Mother Ganga will be duly decorated with the recitation of Ganga Lahari
Ganga Saptami is considered to be the birthday of Mother Ganga. Tirtha priest Rajesh Semwal told that on this day Ganga flowed from the matted hair of Shiva to come to earth. This tradition has been going on since the 19th century. Because according to history, before this only the water stream was worshipped in Gangotri Dham.
The priests had built a small temple here
Gangotri Temple Committee Secretary Suresh Semwal told that before the 18th century only the water stream was worshipped in Gangotri. The priests had built a small temple here. In the 19th century, around 1805, Gorkha commander Amar Singh Thapa built the Gangotri temple. In 1815, the famous wandering Englishman D Fraser reached Gangotri. He kept coming to Gangotri for a long time.
Through the Englishman D Fraser, the Tirtha priests met Raja Maan Madho Singh II. After that, the King of Jaipur built a temple in Gangotri Dham. Even though the temple has been rebuilt several times since then, the credit for the creation of the temple is given to Gorkha commander Amar Singh Thapa and the King of Jaipur.
