Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will arrive in Silchar, Assam, on Thursday night to begin his three-day visit to the poll-bound state. Assembly elections are scheduled in Assam in a few weeks.
Officials said Shah will stay overnight in Silchar, Cachar district, and on Friday, visit the Border Security Force (BSF) Natunpur border outpost on the India-Bangladesh border to review the situation.
They said he will then launch the “Vibrant Villages Programme” (VVP), an initiative focused on border infrastructure and livelihoods, in Natunpur. He will also address a rally in the Barak Valley to launch the BJP’s election campaign. Shah will then travel to Agartala, Tripura, and return to Assam in the evening.
Officials said he will attend the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Annual Day Parade at the Arjun Bhogeshwar Barua Sports Complex in Guwahati on Saturday. This parade is being held for the first time in the Northeast.
Shah will also lay the foundation stone for the new campus of the 10th Assam Police Battalion at Kasutoli in Sonapur, near Guwahati. This is Shah’s third visit to Assam since December 29 last year, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has set a target of retaining power for a third consecutive term. Elections for the 126-member Assam Assembly are expected to be held in March and April.
