A new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower will soon be constructed at Dehradun Airport. The airport authorities are currently identifying a suitable plot of land within the airport premises. Construction of the ATC tower and technical block will begin after the land is finalized.
The Jolly Grant airstrip was expanded and transformed into Dehradun Airport in 2006-07. Prior to this expansion, the ATC tower and meteorological department operated from an old vehicle on the airstrip. After the airport expansion in 2006-07, a new ATC tower and meteorological department building were constructed. This tower is located quite far from the terminal building, along the edge of the runway.
The new tower and technical block are being built to further improve air traffic control. The construction is targeted for completion within four years. Before the new tower is operational, the existing ATC tower will be upgraded with a new automation system and surveillance equipment. This will significantly enhance the capacity to control aircraft, allowing the ATC system to function more efficiently and automatically.
