The first digital forensic lab will be set up in the state to prevent GST theft. With the establishment of this lab, the investigation of tax theft cases will be accelerated. Cabinet approval has been given for the lab to be built at a cost of Rs 12.9 crore.
National Forensic Science University Gujarat will operate the Digital Forensic Lab in the state. The state tax department is continuously conducting raids to prevent GST theft. Many times during the action, digital equipment is seized from the firms for GST investigation. The department does not have the expertise to investigate digital evidence. For this, the department had sent a proposal to the government to set up a digital forensic lab in the state. The cabinet approved it.
Department officials say that till now, in the action taken on GST theft, laptops, mobiles and other digital records seized from the firms were sent to the central lab for investigation. Due to this, immediate action is not taken against the firms. Now with the state having its own digital forensic lab, the cases of tax theft will be accelerated. This will increase the revenue of the government.
