The Election Commission of India has issued a show cause notice to six registered political parties in Uttarakhand which have been inactive for the last six years. All these are the parties which have not participated in a single election in the six years since 2019 and whose offices have no physical address.
The parties have to respond to this notice by 5 pm on July 21. As per the instructions of the Commission, out of the 42 registered unrecognized political parties in Uttarakhand at present, there are many parties which are not able to fulfill the necessary conditions to remain in the Registered Unrecognized Political Parties (RUPP). In this regard, six such parties of Uttarakhand have been identified.
- The decision on the final delisting of these parties will be taken by the Election Commission of India. The registration of political parties (national/state/unrecognized) in the country is done by the Election Commission under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The objective of the Election Commission of India in this entire exercise is to purify the political system and promote transparency in the electoral process.
