Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Chairman of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, reviewed road safety measures in Uttarakhand during a meeting with the Chief Secretary and all District Magistrates. The review revealed that between January and August 2026, the state recorded 1,480 road accidents, resulting in 884 fatalities and 1,626 injuries. The highest number of accidents occurred in the districts of Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar, Haridwar, and Nainital.
Justice Sapre directed officials to transform all districts into ‘zero-fatality districts’ and to establish better coordination among the ‘4Es’ (Engineering, Enforcement, Education, and Emergency Care). Key directives included:
• Strict enforcement of the ‘No Helmet, No Entry’ rule in government offices and educational institutions.
• Installation of automated tracks for driving tests, as well as ANPR cameras and trauma centers along the Char Dham routes.
• Timely repair of potholes and installation of crash barriers on hill roads in accordance with IRC standards.
• Improvement of response times to ensure prompt medical care reaches victims during the ‘Golden Hour’.
