The Uttarakhand Congress staged a massive protest on Friday, demanding the dissolution of the Election Commission of India and the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, along with the other two Election Commissioners.
Led by State Congress President Ganesh Godiyal, party in-charge Kumari Selja, Leader of the Opposition Yashpal Arya, and former Chief Minister Harish Rawat, party workers marched from Congress Bhawan to the Secretariat. While laying siege to the election office located within the Secretariat, the workers burned an effigy of the Chief Election Commissioner.
In a memorandum addressed to the President and submitted through the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Sadar), the Congress alleged a conspiracy to delete the names of valid voters in Uttarakhand on a large scale by filing ‘Form-7’ applications under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
The party demanded that details of all Form-7 applications be made public, that an impartial physical verification be conducted, and that the incumbent Election Commissioners be removed and replaced with new appointees.
