Kollam: Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi said on Friday that in current times, people in politics and international relations are moving towards darkness and away from knowledge. The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha also said that whether in politics or international relations, no effort is being made to understand the other person, and violence is being resorted to in dealing with disagreement.
Rahul Gandhi said, “Today, in our politics and international relations, we see that everyone is running towards darkness and away from knowledge. No effort is made to understand the other person; you just bomb them and kill them.” He alleged, “The same is true in our politics. If you disagree with someone, you attack that person or become violent towards them.”
Rahul Gandhi was speaking at an event here to commemorate the centenary of the meeting between Mahatma Gandhi and reformist saint Sreenarayana Guru. He said that both Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru were against such violence and advocated love, respect, forgiveness, and understanding among people.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi said, “Mahatma Gandhi’s struggle against the British made me realize the difference between power and strength. The British Empire had strength, but not power. Gandhiji did not have strength, but he possessed truth, and therefore, he possessed power. Similarly, Narayana Guruji did not have strength, he did not have immense wealth, he did not travel in a luxurious car, yet he was the most powerful person in Kerala during his time.”
Rahul said, “Imagine that after a hundred years, the entire political class of Kerala has come to pay tribute to him.” He also said that Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru sent a message to those who use violence and hatred that they achieve nothing, they only cause harm.
He said, “The political battle in India is also very similar. On one side there is truth, non-violence, and humility, and on the other side there is anger, violence, hatred, and arrogance. People with violence and anger may have force, but they have no power because the spirit of people like Narayan Guruji and Mahatma Gandhiji, and indeed, the spirit of India, is fundamentally based on the idea of truth and non-violence.”
