Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet on Tuesday recommended to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha that a week-long session be held in Srinagar before shifting offices to Jammu, the Union Territory’s winter capital. The cabinet meeting was held this morning in the Srinagar wing of the Civil Secretariat, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and attended by all four cabinet ministers.
ETV Bharat has learned from sources that the cabinet has recommended that the session be convened from October 13th to 20th. “The session in Srinagar must conclude before October 28th. Therefore, we have recommended holding it for a week starting October 13th,” the source said.
This will be the third legislative session of the Omar-led government in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The first four-day introductory session was held in November last year after the swearing-in of the Chief Minister and his cabinet. The second winter session was held in Jammu in March, with the final meeting held on April 29th.
Following the terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, a one-day session was held in Srinagar, in which the legislature condemned the attack. According to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019, there must be a six-month gap between two sessions of the legislature.
The Act states that the Lieutenant Governor shall summon the Assembly from time to time to meet at such time and place as he deems appropriate, but there shall not be a six-month gap between the last meeting of one session and the date fixed for its first meeting in the next. The source said that in addition to recommending an assembly session, some other administrative decisions were also taken regarding housing and other development matters.
