Kolkata: Kolkata Police has arrested BJP leader Rakesh Singh for allegedly breaking into the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters, smearing Rahul Gandhi’s picture with ink, tearing banners and raising slogans. Police arrested the BJP leader from a flat in Tangra, Kolkata on Tuesday night.
Police officer Rupesh Kumar said that Rakesh Singh was arrested on Tuesday night after receiving a tip-off. Rakesh Singh was absconding for the last few days. The police were actively looking for him. Police arrested him by conducting a raid at around 2 am on the basis of a tip-off.
A case was registered against Rakesh Singh in connection with the vandalism at the state Congress office Vidhan Bhavan in Moulali, Kolkata last Friday. Allegedly, this pre-planned attack was carried out by BJP leader Rakesh Singh and his supporters. Police have already arrested Rakesh Singh’s son in that incident. But even then the police could not find any clue about Rakesh Singh. He was absconding for a long time.
According to police sources, Rakesh Singh’s name has been linked to several cases including the vandalism at Vidhan Bhavan. The police is also questioning Rakesh Singh.
After the attack on Congress Bhavan, Kolkata Police arrested Rakesh Singh’s son from South City. Rakesh Singh was arrested after a search of about 5 days. It is being told that he was produced in court on Wednesday.
It is learned that Rakesh Singh had gone underground since the incident of vandalism at Congress Bhavan. When the police arrested his son, he released a video in which he threatened the police and also targeted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The BJP leader was also heard making several allegations against Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma.
